Understanding Diabetes: A Growing Concern in Sri Lanka

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition that happens when the body’s blood sugar is too high. It is a chronic condition that affects how your body processes blood sugar (glucose). It occurs when the pancreas cannot produce enough insulin or when your body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

There are three main types of diabetes:
1. Type 1 Diabetes: The body doesn't produce insulin - often diagnosed in childhood.
2. Type 2 Diabetes: The body doesn't use insulin effectively - commonly linked to lifestyle.
3. Gestational Diabetes: Develops during pregnancy and can affect both mother and child.

Why is Diabetes on the Rise in Sri Lanka?

In Sri Lanka, diabetes is a growing concern, with lifestyle factors like high-carbohydrate diets, limited physical activity, and stress contributing to its prevalence.

Sri Lankan lifestyles have undergone a significant shift in recent decades. Traditional meals, often rich in natural fiber and low in sugar, have been replaced by high-carb and processed foods. Physical activity has also decreased due to sedentary jobs and urbanization. These factors, combined with stress and genetic predisposition, have made diabetes a common health issue.

Key Risk Factors:
- Overweight or obesity
- Family history of diabetes
- Lack of exercise
- Unhealthy diets high in sugary foods and beverages
- Stress and irregular sleeping patterns

Early Symptoms of Diabetes

Many people remain unaware they have diabetes until complications arise. Early detection can make a significant difference in management. Look out for:

- Excessive thirst
- Frequent urination
- Blurred vision
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue and lack of energy

If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare provider and get screened.

Living Well with Diabetes: Tips for Sri Lankan Lifestyles

Managing diabetes doesn’t mean giving up your favorite Sri Lankan dishes or traditions. Small, sustainable changes can have a big impact on your health.

1. Modify Your Diet:
- Switch from white rice to red rice, quinoa, or kurakkan roti.
- Add high-fiber vegetables like gotukola, polos, or mallum to your meals.
- Avoid sugary desserts like ice cream and sweet meats such as kavum and opt for fresh fruits like papaya and guava.

2. Stay Active:
- Incorporate 30 minutes of daily exercise. Even a brisk walk in your garden or neighborhood can help.
- Try exercises like yoga to meditate to reduce stress.

3. Monitor Your Blood Sugar:
- Regular blood sugar checks can help prevent complications.
- Visit a diabetes care center for professional advice on managing your condition.

4. Foot Care is Critical:
- Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water, and always dry them well.
- Inspect your feet for cuts or blisters and wear comfortable shoes indoors and outdoors.

Complications of Untreated Diabetes

If left unmanaged, diabetes can lead to severe complications:

- Eye related: Diabetic retinopathy can cause vision loss.
- Kidney disease: Chronic kidney damage is a common issue.
- Nerve damage: Sensory neuropathy can cause pain, tingling, or loss of feeling.
- Heart disease: Increased risk of stroke and heart attacks.

By taking proactive steps, you can avoid these complications and live a fulfilling life.
