While there are multiple benefits from a kidney transplant, it is a major surgical procedure that involves certain risks.
This evaluation includes a review of the patient's medical history, physical examination, and blood investigations. The objective here is to identify any possible risks and decide whether the patient is a good candidate for a kidney transplant.
If the patient is planning to receive a kidney transplant from a living donor, the donor also needs to be evaluated.
A meeting will be arranged with the Ethical Committee of the Ministry of Health for clearance on the ethical & legal aspects relating to both donor & recipient and for authorization to proceed with the transplant.
The Kidney Transplant team, which consists of the representation of Specialists of multiple disciplines, will gather to discuss and evaluate the conditions of the patient & donor. This team will counsel the patient and family explaining to them the process & the post- surgical care required.
A kidney transplant surgery is performed by a team made up of a Vascular Surgeon, Anesthetist, Nephrologists and a team of nurses. The surgery typically takes several hours and involves placing the new kidney in the patient's lower abdomen.
The patient will be required to stay in the hospital for a minimum of 7 days following surgery for observation and healing. After discharge from the hospital, the patient will need to follow up with their transplant team on a routine basis to manage and monitor their condition and medication.

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to place a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly.
The kidney’s main function is to filter and remove waste, minerals, and fluid from the blood by producing urine.
When kidneys lose this filtering ability, harmful levels of fluid and waste accumulate in the body. This can raise a person’s blood pressure and result in multi organ failure (end-stage kidney disease). This occurs when the kidneys have lost about 90% of their ability to function normally. In a kidney transplant surgery, the donor kidney will typically be implanted in a different region of the abdomen, leaving the two natural kidneys in place. It is a treatment rather than a cure for chronic renal failure. For those who are viewed as potential transplant candidates, it is the preferred course of treatment.
Compared to dialysis, a kidney transplant has many benefits. It can treat kidney failure, enhance health, and give a person a dialysis- free way of life. After receiving a new kidney, a person often has less hydration and dietary limitations. Most people are healthy enough to go back to work or education.
Anyone with end-stage kidney disease may be a candidate for a kidney transplant. However, there are some medical conditions and factors that can make a patient ineligible for a kidney transplant. These include,

Staying Healthy After Your Kidney Transplant
Post-surgery care is just as crucial as the procedure itself. Here’s what you need to know:
1. Medication
You’ll be prescribed immunosuppressive medication to prevent your immune system from rejecting the new kidney.
2. Regular Follow-Ups
Routine check-ups will help monitor your kidney function, detect early signs of rejection, and adjust your medication as needed.
3. Lifestyle Adjustments
Adopting a healthy diet, staying active, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol are essential for maintaining your new kidney’s health.
4. Infection Prevention
Proper hygiene, timely vaccinations, and avoiding exposure to infections are vital to keeping you healthy.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition in which the kidneys are unable to remove waste products and excess fluid from the bloodstream. There are 5 stages in CKD, where the fifth stage is defined as end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). This is complete kidney failure, where the patient requires dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain good health.
Deciding on a kidney transplant is a significant step, and it’s important to explore your options. Discuss the process with your doctor, understand the benefits and risks, and consider what’s best for your lifestyle and health goals.
