The Interventional Radiology division at Asiri Central Hospital was established in 2013, with the installation of the first biplane neuro digital subtraction angiography unit in Sri Lanka. The unit has its own well-equipped patient-receiving area and recovery area with facilities for anaesthesia.
Interventional radiology is rapidly developing and is one of the most technically advanced fields in modern medical practice. Today, many patients are treated with minimally invasive techniques using image guidance, instead of major surgery. This treatment results in equal or better outcomes, as shown by reduced infection rates and recovery time, and a shorter hospital stay. In some situations, it is the only available treatment to prevent mortality or significant morbidity.
Hence, it can be identified as the surgical wing of radiology.
Centre outcomes are comparable with the best such centres of excellence in the world.

Interventional radiology (IR) is an advanced medical specialty that utilizes advanced imaging techniques to perform precise and minimally invasive procedures.
IR is a revolutionary approach to healthcare, which enables unclogging of blocked arteries, closing off abnormal blood vessels, delivering targeted treatments to tumors, and much more. This technology involves smaller incisions, reduced pain, faster recovery times, and fewer complications compared to traditional surgical methods.
For instance, neuro-interventional procedures including endovascular embolization of cerebral aneurysms and cerebral arteriovenous malformations are replacing major neurosurgery and are performed with minimal physical and psychological trauma.
Additionally, mechanical clot retrieval in cases of acute stroke is becoming an essential component of an advanced medical practice. This has revolutionized the potential outcomes for these patients, offering them a chance of a fully functional life vs. death or permanent disability.
Such successes are seen in multiple disciplines in medicine, making IR vital to our healthcare centres.
