About Stroke

A stroke occurs when an artery in your brain is blocked by a clot or when a blood vessel bursts, resulting in parts of the brain dying because the brain is deprived of the blood and oxygen it requires. Our patients say that what scares them the most is how they appear to be in the peak of health at one moment but in the next they are immobile, unable to even call for help.

While some stroke risk factors, like age and race, cannot be controlled, you can still minimize risk by making minor lifestyle adjustments, such as following a balanced diet, engaging in regular exercise, quitting smoking, and taking prescribed medications.

There are different types of strokes:

  • Ischemic Stroke (the most common type): a clot blocks a blood vessel cutting off the blood flow to brain cells.
  • Hemorrhagic Stroke: a weakened vessel ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain tissue, causing blood to accumulate and form a bruise within the brain tissue. This compresses brain cells, causing them to die.
  • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): a clot causes a temporary blockage, usually with no permanent damage to the brain. TIAs are often called ‘mini strokes’.

Symptoms of A Stroke

Knowing the symptoms of a stroke and what to do about it can save a life.

Act F.A.S.T to recognize a stroke!

The most effective treatment for an ischemic stroke is effective only if the stroke is identified and diagnosed within 3 to 4.5 hours of the onset of symptoms.

If you think someone may be having a stroke, act F.A.S.T. and do the following test:

  • F—Face: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
  • A—Arms: Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
  • S—Speech: Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is the speech slurred or strange?
  • T—Time: If you see any of these signs, even if they go away, note the time and call the Asiri Emergency Hotline (+94 77 3569 173) right away.
