What is Cosmetic Surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is a medical technique that focuses on the correction of a physical abnormality and on the improvement of the normal physical features.

Difference Between Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body in order to improve appearance and self-esteem. Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. In general, reconstructive surgery is performed to improve function, but may also be completed to approximate a normal appearance.

Prevalent Aesthetic / Cosmetic Procedures at Asiri Central Hospital

  • Filler injections (Restylane)
Dermal fillers help exclude facial lines by adding volume and fullness of the skin (Thinning lips, shallow areas, wrinkles and scars).
  • BOTOX
The procedure involves administering a neuromodulator in the form of small injections into the problematical areas on the face.
  • Blepharoplasty / Eyelid surgery
Also known as blepharoplasty, an eyelid surgery is performed to improve the appearance of the eyelids.
  • Lip enhancement
Lip enhancement involves anaesthetizing the lips and injecting them with a product designed to create a more desirable pout.
  • Rhinoplasty / Nose job
Rhinoplasty is performed to reshape, reduce or augment a person's nose, remove a hump, narrow nostril width, change the angle between the nose and the mouth, or to correct injury, birth defects, or other problems that affect breathing. Results depend on the patient's nasal bone and cartilage structure, facial shape, skin thickness and age.
  • Otoplasty / Ear surgery / Ear pinning
Reshaping of the ear, most often done by pinning the protruding ear closer to the head.
  • Rhytidectomy / Face lift
A face-lift is the most extensive way to remove or reduce the appearance of wrinkles and sagging of the face caused by age. The skin is literally lifted off the face so that the skin and the tissues beneath can be tightened and the skin can be repositioned smoothly over the face.
  • Chin augmentation / Chin implant
Augmentation of the chin with an implant, usually silicone, by sliding genioplasty of the jawbone or by suture of the soft tissue

  • Breast augmentations / Breast Implant
In reconstructive plastic surgery, breast implants can be placed to restore a natural looking breast following a mastectomy or to correct congenital defects and deformities of the chest wall. They are also used cosmetically to enlarge the appearance of the breast through breast augmentation surgery.
  • Reduction mammoplastry / Breast reduction
Reduction mammoplasty (also known as breast reduction) is a procedure for reducing the size of large breasts. If you have large breasts, you might choose to have breast reduction surgery to ease discomfort or to achieve a breast size proportionate to your body.
  • Mastopexy / Breast lift
Mastopexy is the plastic surgery mammoplasty procedure for raising sagging breasts upon the chest of the woman, by changing and modifying the size, contour, and elevation of the breasts.
  • Breast reduction for men / Gynaecomastia
Gynaecomastia refers to the development of breast tissue or overdeveloped breasts in males. The cause for the condition is often unknown and it can affect only one breast or both.
  • Breast reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure commonly performed after a mastectomy to offer patients psychological and aesthetic benefits when recovering from breast cancer. This procedure allows many women to fully return to the life they enjoyed before being diagnosed with breast cancer, with barely any signs of the disease remaining. The most commonly performed breast reconstruction procedure is done with implant placement, which uses a saline-filled implant to replace lost breast tissue and restore the appearance of the breasts.

  • Abdominoplasty / Tummy tuck
Known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck removes excess fat and skin, and in most cases restores weakened or separated muscles creating an abdominal profile that is smoother and firmer.
A flat and well-toned abdomen is something many of us strive for through exercise and weight control. Sometimes these methods cannot achieve our goals.
  • Labiaplasty
Labiaplasty (also labioplasty) is a plastic surgery procedure for altering the labia minora and the labia majora, the paired tissue structures bounding the vestibule of the vulva. The indications for the correction of labial hypertrophy are two-fold: (i) the correction of defect and deformity, and (ii) the cosmetic refinement of the pudendum femininum. Despite no formal medical definition of labia minora hypertrophy (length, width, girth), labiaplasty corrects the clinical conditions wherein a woman presents labia minora that are disproportionately greater than her labia majora; the labioplastic correction of the disproportions creates less asymmetrical labia minora that are functionally and aesthetically satisfactory to the woman
  • Brachiopasty / Arm lift
Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, improves the contour of the upper arm by removing the fat and excess skin which hangs there. This is most commonly requested by aging women, but some men opt to have this procedure as well. An arm lift is often performed on post-bariatric surgery patients who have lost large amounts of weight.
  • Thigh lift / Buttocks lift
In a thigh and buttock lift, a section of excess skin fat from all around the hip area is surgically removed. Thigh and buttock lifts are ideal for patients who are in relatively good shape with excess skin and fat in the thigh area. This cosmetic surgery procedure is particularly useful following massive weight loss, such as after gastric bypass surgery.
  • Removal of auxiliary fat pads
Removal of fatty tissues called the axillary fat pad, which contains lymph nodes. The number of lymph nodes found in the fat pad varies from person to person.
  • Liposuction / Suction lipectomy
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty ("fat modeling"), liposculpture suction lipectomy ("suction-assisted fat removal") or simply lipo is a cosmetic surgery operation that removes fat from many different sites on the human body. Areas affected can range from the abdomen, thighs and buttocks, to the neck, backs of the arms and elsewhere.

  • Reconstructive surgery
  • Peripheral nerve surgery
  • Hand surgery
  • Paediatric plastic surgery
  • Craniofacial surgery
  • Burns – acute/late reconstruction

Recovery from Cosmetic Surgery

Each patient relieves pain after surgery in different ways. Your surgeon will prescribe the appropriate pain medications to help minimize any discomfort. In general, most facial cosmetic operations have minimal discomfort post-operatively. Liposuction is slightly more uncomfortable, and operations that require elevation or tightening of the muscles-such as an abdominoplasty or breast augmentation can cause slight discomfort.

Botox is injected serially into a group of muscles which controls frowning and wrinkling, with a very fine needle.

It is a relatively painless procedure. The patient will experience pain from the needle pricks only. A simple 10 minutes’ procedure

After the treatment you should remain upright for 3 to 4 hours. During this period, you must try to move the muscles that have been injected as much as possible to maximize the effect of the BOTOX on the muscle. Do not rub the skin or muscles around the injected site.

Botox lasts about three to four months, and the treatment can be repeated as needed. When it wears off, you will begin to notice increased muscle action and some reformation of the wrinkles. It appears that with repeated use, the effect of Botox becomes longer lasting.

Restylane (fillers) lasts for about nine months. It is a crystal clear gel based on non-animal hyaluronic acid. Restylane is produced by the Swedish biotechnology company Q-Med AB.

The decision is based on a number of factors, including the patient's desires, reasons for the surgery and overall health. For example, are you doing it because you feel your breasts are too small relative to your body contour or are you unhappy with the size and firmness of your breasts following pregnancy, breastfeeding or major weight loss? Patients may require breast lift and implants. Unevenness between the breasts can also be a motivating factor. Your surgeon can help you make the right decision during your pre-surgical appointment(s).

This can only be determined after you are evaluated by a plastic surgeon; generally, any kind of plastic surgery in this area should improve your appearance.

A few patients notice small change in their voice after rhinoplasty but this is uncommon. Professionals who rely on their voice, such as singers, should share any concerns with their surgeon, however, because the nose does play a role in how we sound.

It depends upon the patient's disease and current medications. Consult your plastic surgeon about your specific situation.

A complete pre-testing series of appointments is done prior to any surgery and an anesthetist evaluation before surgery.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a treatment that doctors use to accelerate healing in various areas of the body. It may help restore hair growth. PRP contains a range of growth factors and proteins speed tissue repair. As some types of hair loss result from damage to hair follicles, researchers initially hypothesized that PRP could help regrow hair by reversing the process that occurs in androgenetic alopecia.

The following steps are an example of a common approach to PRP injections for hair loss; The entire process may take about 1 hour, and several sessions may be necessary. After receiving PRP treatment, a person can usually return to their regular activities without any limitations.

  • A medical professional draws blood from a vein in the arm.
  • They place the blood sample in a centrifuge.
  • The centrifuge spins the blood, separating its components.
  • A medical professional extracts the platelets using a syringe.
  • A doctor injects the platelets into targeted areas of the scalp.

Laser hair removal works by heating the hair follicles to stop new hairs from growing. This puts the hair follicles in a state of dormancy for a long period of time — much longer than with shaving and waxing. When the hairs do grow back, they’ll be lighter, finer, and fewer in number. Laser treatment only reduces the number of unwanted hairs in a given area.

Laser therapy uses high-heat laser beams as a mild form of radiation. During the process, these laser beams heat up and damage your hair follicles.

Your hair follicles are located just below the skin. They’re responsible for producing new strands of hair. If the follicles are destroyed, then hair production is temporarily disabled.

By contrast, tweezing, shaving, and waxing all remove hair above the surface. These methods don’t target hair-producing follicles.

Follow-up treatments are necessary to get the most out of laser hair removal. The exact number of maintenance laser treatments varies by individual. Additionally, for the best results, you’ll likely need occasional maintenance sessions. These help ensure that the hair follicles don’t regenerate.
